On February 22, 2013, construction will begin on the National Music Centre of Canada (NMC) at the site of the King Edward Hotel in Calgary, Alberta. The new institution is scheduled to open in early 2015.

The NMC will completely restore and revitalize the 1905 ‘King Eddy’ hotel, site of a legendary blues club, and add upwards of 90,000 sf of new space for performance, recording, broadcast, exhibition, education and public events. The new Centre, conceived by the Cantos Music Foundation of Calgary and designed by Allied Works, will be the first of its kind in North America, and will be a new national cultural institution that will preserve and promote Canada’s diverse musical heritage.

In its January issue, architecture and design magazine Azure listed the National Music Centre as one of its 10 Projects to Watch worldwide in 2013. In addition, a number of events are being planned for the groundbreaking week of February 18-24. Please check back for future announcements and articles on the NMC.
